For a course titled Mechanical and Aerospace Systems, I worked on a team of three to create an ornithopter- a mechanical flying machine. Our goal was to design, test, and build an ornithopter using flapping wings, rather than propellers or turbines.
Although I worked together with my teammates for the design part of the project, my individual contribution to the project was in fabrication. During this project I 3D printed with flexible material, and fabricated other components with carbon fiber, mylar, and ABS plastic. The backbones of the ornithopter were carbon fiber, and connectors were 3D printed. To allow slight upward movement of the back of the wing, we used flexible 3D printed material. The final machine flapped asymmetrically. We had future plans to adjust the design to use something with higher speed gear ratio than a worm gear. |
