In fall of 2014, I designed and fabricated the mechanical subsystem of a project with one goal: to build a voice-activated chess board in which the pieces moved by themselves. The inspiration for the project was Harry Potter's wizard's chess.
I designed and built a two-axis gantry system with an electromagnet to move magnetic chess pieces, unseen. We chose a belt and pulley system and we 3D printed the majority of the parts in order to reduce cost and facilitate rapid design iteration. I used acrylic for the 2ft x 2ft playing surface to avoid sagging in the middle. I also designed the decoration for the chess board. I then integrated our system with the electrical and software subsystems. Throughout 2015 and 2016, we participated by request in multiple science fairs and expos at local schools. We also continued improving the project by adding limit switches so that longer games could be played. |
