For a mechanical design class, I worked on a team of six and subsystem of two to design a wind-powered, time-accurate model of our planetary system. The goal was to design a transmission system that received power from the wind and resulted in planets rotating around the sun with accurate ratios of their velocities, and some planets rotating around their own axis with accurate velocity ratios as well.
I focused on the design of the gear stacks by determining the ratios necessary to move the planets around the sun with time accuracy. This involved designing custom gears as well as designing a system of nested pipes that could rotate with respect to each other. Also important to the project were budget constraints, strength requirements, and weather-proofing. The entire design was made with SolidWorks. |
